In 2011, the City hired Hatch Mott MacDonald to do an analysis report of trenching and tunneling options. This report estimates that a shallow trench would cost ~$16,480 per linear foot, a covered shallow trench would cost ~$23,332 per linear foot, a deep trench would cost ~$48,545 per linear foot, and a covered deep trench would cost ~$40,541 per linear foot.

In 2014, the city commissioned a preliminary analysis of potential paths for grade separation. The cheapest options presented (at $276.7 million) would require the full acquisition of 45 houses near the impacted intersections). Our hope is that tunneling could help avoid this negative impact and save the threatened houses.
